SA Paediatrics and Newborns (SAPAN) – Shannon Clift
BHSc (Speech Pathology): Bachelor of Health Science (Speech Pathology)
Shannon graduated from Charles Sturt University in 2003 with a Bachelor of Health Science (Speech Pathology) and has worked as a Speech Pathologist for nearly 20 years. Shannon specialises in the assessment and treatment of paediatric feeding and mealtime challenges, as well as early intervention assessment and therapy for babies, toddlers, and young children with developmental delays.
Shannon is highly skilled in assessing, treating, and managing a wide range of feeding challenges and has specialised in this field for over 11 years. Her experience has included the management of medically complex neonates, newborn and infant feeding such as bottle or breastfeeding difficulties, challenges in transitioning to solids, coughing or spluttering with fluids or solids, food refusal, gagging when eating, chewing difficulties, oral hypersensitivity or aversions, sensory processing, and paediatric swallowing. Shannon is trained in various feeding intervention approaches and can also support families whose children are fussy eaters, or when for various reasons family mealtimes have become challenging or stressful.
In addition to working for several paediatric teams both interstate and overseas across her career, Shannon worked for SA Health in the acute hospital setting for the past 11 years. She provided Speech Pathology services to paediatric and infant inpatients on the Children’s Ward and in the Special Care Nursery, as well as to paediatric outpatients. This role comprised feeding services as well as being part of an outpatient multidisciplinary team with Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy, providing assessment and intervention to babies and toddlers with delayed development. Shannon’s current position in SA Health is with a community based early intervention team, predominately providing services related to communication development.
Shannon is a personable and caring clinician who is passionate about working closely with families. She values the family unit as an integral part of the team whilst partnering together to determine the needs of the child. Shannon prides herself on providing families with expert intervention and care that will support their child in reaching their full potential.
